This work takes the personal experience of living abroad as a point of departure to explore the dynamics of cultural difference and latent memory. The material chosen, tatami, functions not merely as a component of everyday space, but as a symbolic medium that connects body and memory. Its woven structure, the scent of rush grass, and the soft sensation transmitted through the skin engage multiple senses—sight, smell, and touch—to reactivate fragmented memories and vividly reconstruct scenes of home even in a foreign land.
At the same time, tatami also operates as a device of cultural translation. For those unfamiliar with it, tatami opens new sensory experiences and serves as an entry point into different cultural contexts. This “sensory mediation” does more than evoke nostalgia; it fosters dialogue and mutual understanding across cultures.
Furthermore, the form of the bracelet, which directly touches the skin, creates a site of communication beyond language. Jewelry, as one of the closest forms of expression to the body, is also a universal language that transcends cultural and racial boundaries. Its very nature bridges personal memory and collective experience, generating encounters between people of diverse backgrounds.
By bringing together tatami as a local cultural symbol and jewelry as a universal medium, this work presents “a place where nostalgia and novelty intersect,” aiming to open a new horizon where memory and intercultural understanding coexist.
本作は、海外移住という個人的経験を起点に、文化的差異と潜在的記憶の作用を探る試みです。素材として選んだ「畳」は、単なる生活空間の要素ではなく、身体と記憶を媒介する象徴的な存在として機能します。その編み目の規則性、い草の香り、皮膚に伝わる柔らかな感触は、視覚・嗅覚・触覚といった複数の感覚を通じて断片化された記憶を呼び覚まし、異郷においても故郷の情景を鮮やかに再生します。
同時に、畳は文化的な翻訳装置としても作用します。畳を知らない人々にとって、それは未知の感覚を開く契機となり、異なる文化的文脈への入口となります。この「五感による媒介」は、単に郷愁を呼び起こすだけでなく、文化間の対話や相互理解を促す働きを持っています。
さらに、肌に直接触れる腕輪という形式は、言語を超えたコミュニケーションの場を創出します。ジュエリーは身体に最も近い表現形式であると同時に、文化や人種を超えて共有される普遍的な言語でもあります。その特性は、個人的記憶と集団的経験を架橋し、異なる背景をもつ人々を交錯させる場を生み出します。
畳というローカルな文化象徴と、ジュエリーという普遍的なメディアを結合させることで、本作は「懐かしさと新しさが交差する場」を提示し、記憶と異文化理解が共存する新たな地平を切り開くことを目指しています。
